Improve Golf Swing With Exercise

You can improve your golf swing with proper exercise. Though golf is not technically a fitness sport, fit people actually play better. Exercise should be focused on building strength, but this is only part of the equation. You must also be flexible to perform the task of a golf swing. Flexibility gives you a greater range of motion and helps to prevent injury to improve golf swing.

Studies show that you can actually boost your physical strength by stretching between strength exercises. Improve golf swing motion and stability by adding stretching exercises before, during and after each workout. There is a proper and improper way to stretch. Before your body warms up properly, you can injure yourself with improper stretching. Begin the workout with gentle stretches, only to the point of feeling a tug and no pain. Stretch all of your major muscle groups each time you work out.

Stand straight up with your feet together. Bend over and touch your toes (or come as close as you can without pain). Hold for twenty seconds and stand back up. Repeat three times, working up to a hold of thirty seconds and five repetitions. Stop between each strength exercise and repeat this stretching exercise. After your workout, repeat it again, but this time you can stretch further, just to the point of pain. Since your muscles are warm, and you have already loosened them with stretching, the pull will improve your flexibility rather than strain a muscle.

Another stretching exercise to improve golf swing range of motion targets your sides. Stand as you would to complete the exercise above. Fold your hands behind your head with your elbows back and your chest out. Bend to the side and hold for three seconds. Straighten up and repeat on the other side. Complete five repetitions on each side. As you stretch your legs with the exercise above, add this to your stretches throughout your workout. Each time you repeat it, you will be a little more limber. At the end of the workout you can stretch just to the point of feeling pain without straining a muscle.

When stretching to improve golf swing abilities, be gentle when your muscles are not yet warmed up. As you work out and your muscles warm, stretch a little further and hold a little longer. In addition to flexibility, you will actually be building more strength. At the end of a workout, stretching exercises are a great way to cool down. If you end a workout session with cardiovascular exercises, such as a treadmill or exercise bike, stretching is a good way to slow your heart rate safely while improving flexibility and protecting your muscles from injury.

While a few golfers are able to keep their game without exercise, the vast majority of us must work hard to play well. Your efforts in the gym are almost as important as your efforts on the driving range when it comes to playing well. A strong, flexible golfer has a more solid back swing, is better about following through with the swing and suffers fewer injuries than less fit competitors. Staying fit is also a great way to make sure you are enjoying the game of golf well into your golden years.
